Cost of Living in Korea for Students

Planning your budget before arriving in Korea helps you avoid financial stress. Here is a practical overview of student expenses.

Accommodation

University dormitories are the most affordable option (around 200,000–400,000 KRW per month). Off-campus housing (one-room, goshiwon) in Seoul can range from 400,000 to 800,000 KRW or more depending on location.

Food

University cafeterias offer meals for 3,000–5,000 KRW. Cooking at home and occasional eating out can keep monthly food costs between 200,000 and 400,000 KRW.

Transport

Public transport in Seoul is efficient and relatively cheap. A monthly pass or regular T-money use can keep transport under 60,000 KRW per month for students.

Other Expenses

Health insurance, phone, and personal items add roughly 100,000–200,000 KRW per month. Overall, a modest student budget in Seoul is approximately 800,000–1,200,000 KRW per month excluding tuition.
